Defense Minister Hamada with State Secretary PintoDefense Minister Hamada with State Secretary PintoDefense Minister Hamada had a meeting with visiting Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and Security of Timor-Leste Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao on March 9. At the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on such matters as the receiving of students from Timor-Leste at the National Defense Academy in and after fiscal 2010 and the promotion of defense exchanges through international conferences, such as the Tokyo Defense Forum.

On February 12, Dr. Julio Tomas Pinto, Secretary of State for Defense of Timor-Leste, paid a courtesy call on Defense Minister Hamada and exchanged views on the two countries' defense policies and bilateral defense exchange.

State Secretary Pinto visited Japan upon the invitation of the Ministry of Defense. He also paid a courtesy call on Vice-Minister of Defense Kohei Masuda, visited the Central Readiness Force, the National Defense Academy, and the Self-Defense Fleet Headquarters, and exchanged views with professors of National Defense Academy and researchers of the National Institute for Defense Studies. He returned home on February 14.
